1865 Woodlands burned by stragglers from Sherman's army;
witnessed the burning of Columbia, described in Sack and
Destruction of the City of Columbia, S. C.

1866 Made arduous but largely unsuccessful efforts to reestab-
lish relations with Northern publishers
1867 Published "Joscelyn; A Tale of the Revolution" serially in
the magazine Old Guard
1869 Published "The Cub of the Panther; A Mountain Legend"
serially in Old Guard; published "Voltmeier, or the
Mountain Men" serially in Illuminated Western World
1870 Delivered oration on "The Sense of the Beautiful" May 3;
died, after a long bout with cancer, at the Society Street
home of his daughter Augusta (Mrs. Edward Roach) in
Charleston, June 11, survived by Augusta and five of the
fourteen children from his second marriage
