CHECKLIST OF PSEUDONYMOUS CORRESPONDENCE
IN THE CHARLESTON MERCURY
William Gilmore Simms maintained a constant stream of publications to newspapers in Charleston and in other parts of South Carolina. Letters, poems, essays, and belles lettres were often published using a variety of pseudonyms or were published with no bylines. Certainly his letters to the Charleston Mercury command respect as part of his correspondence, but the great number and length of these items convinced the editors of the first five volumes of The Letters of William. Gilmore Simms to forbear including them in full. Many were cited in notes to items of correspondence published in the volumes, but their texts were not published. This supplement treats Simms's pseudonymous writings as regular correspondence, but the same constraints of book length that convinced the previous editors to omit the full texts has been the rule of action employed here. Simms's "Louis,""Gossypium," and "Nemo" letters are listed first by pseudonym and then by date of publication in the Charleston Mercury, The five unsigned letters on "Our Seacoast Defences" are listed by date of publication in the Mercury,
"Lorris"
Employing the pseudonym "Lorris," Simms published eighty-seven letters in the Charleston Mercury, from December 12, 1854, to May 30, 1856. The date of each issue containing a "Lorris" letter is listed here. For a complete bibliography and index to these letters see Nancy Anne Pantusa, "An Index to the `Lorris' Letters of William Gilmore Simms" (master's thesis, University of Georgia, 1975). James E. Kibler's Pseudonymous Publications of William Gilmore Simms (Athens: University of Georgia Press, 1976) contains a listing of the letters with descriptive titles.
