belong were printed. The numbers we gave those letters indicate their correct position in the chronological arrangement: in other words, letter 21a should follow letter 21, letter 588a should follow letter 588, and so forth. The letters in this volume are similarly numbered in order to indicate their correct position in the chronological arrangement: letter 24a should follow letter 24; letter 65b should follow letter 65a (printed in Appendix 11 to Volume V); letter 77aa should come between letters 77a and 77b (both printed in Appendix II to Volume V), and so forth. In a few cases we were faced with the problem of numbering a letter that falls between a letter printed in one of the earlier volumes and one included in Appendix II to Volume V; such letters are numbered "(la)." When in footnotes we refer to letters in Appendix II to Volume V, we have italicized the number of the letter so that the reader will look for it there rather than in this volume.
