Sources/Reviews
Composition history The novel Pelayo grew out of a verse-drama Simms wrote at "17-18" years old, 1823-1824.  According to the Letters, Simms republished portions of this original drama in the short-lived Charleston Rambler between 14 November and 21 December 1843.  These clippings constitute an excerpt from this original dramatic version of Pelayo.  See Letters 1: 285, 4: 595n.
