Composition history Charleston City Gazette (Oct. 9, 1830). [Conjectured source of clipping (Kibler, Poetry, 168)]
    Notes Position: top left

Kibler notes that the poem in this clipping is unsigned, but it is actually signed, ''Toby'' (Poetry 168); this pseudonym, Kibler speculates, is ''Perhaps the humorous Uncle Toby of Sterne's 'Tristam Shandy.'  Toby has many things in common with Simms's Porgy'' (Pseudonymous Publications 80).
