Composition history Magnolia Cemetery.  The Proceedings at the Dedication of the Grounds. (Charleston: Walker & James, 1851), 6 [Conjectured source of clipping].

Kibler notes that the poem also appears under the title ''Ode for the Occasion'' in Scrapbook D and the Printed Poetry Box in the Charles Carroll Simms collection (215).
Description ''FATHER OF LIFE!  all fields are thine, ...''

Clipping reads:  ORIGINAL ODE. | [rule]
Notes Position: top left.

The reverse of the clipping provides useful information, including the date of the cemetery dedication--Nov. 19, 1850--and that Simms delivered ''City of the Silent,'' later published in Poems: Descriptive, Dramatic, Legendary and Contemplative, at the ceremony.
