      Notes Position: top right

Simms corrects ''wing'' in the first verse and writes ''wrong'' in the margin next to it.

Kibler speculates that the clipping derives from ''Presumably the Barnwell, S.C. Sentinel, a file of which is as yet unlocated.  The poem likely dates from the mid-1860's'' (Poetry 425).

Kibler notes that Edisto is a ''South Carolina proper name for a river island, and Indian tribe.  Simms's plantation was located on the Edisto River'' (Pseudonymous Publications 49).
