Transcription CONGRATULATIONS

Caroline Collins has completed the requirements for her Ph. D. at the University
of Arkansas, with a dissertation entitled "Racial, Sexual, and Social Dynamics:
The Comic Fiction of William Gilmore Simms, Mark Twain, and William
Faulkner," directed by John C. Guilds. A published poet and Simms scholar
she was co-editor of William Gilmore Simms and the American Frontier (U. of
Georgia Press, 1997)—she is interested in an appointment that would give her the
opportunity to teach Simms.

SOCIETY MEMBER'S NEW BOOK

Charles S. Watson's important new volume, The History of Southern Drama was
published by the University of Kentucky Press in 1997. It has a significant
section on Simms and this too-often neglected area of his career. Congratulation
to Charles and best .wishes for the success of this significant contribution to
Southern letters.

SIMMS AND THE CROCKETT ALMANACS

I am doing a project on some of the alligator folklore in "Bald-Head Bill Bauldy
and am trying to establish affinities between some of this material and similar
elements in the Crockett Almanacs. If anyone has information pertaining to
Simms's familiarity with the Crockett Almanacs, please contact Ed Piacentino at
the Department of English, High Point University, University Station, Montlieu
Avenue, High Point, NC 27262-3598 or email him at
