IN EXCELLENT NEW BOOK

An excellent essay dealing with Simms's Golden Christmas,
The Cub of the Panther, and "Sharp Snaffles" appears in Jacob
Rivers's Cultural Values in the Southern Sporting Narrative
(University of South Carolina Press, 2002). Dr. Rivers read from this
work on 25 January 2003 at the South Carolina League of the South
Cultural Center in Abbeville, S. C. to a congenial large audience. In
the discussions there was much mention of Simms, as several Simms
Society life members were in attendance. These included David
Aiken, Robert Hayes, and James Kibler. Dr. Rivers spent his youth
hunting in the South Carolina low country. He now manages the
office of Veteran's Affairs at the University of South Carolina, wher
he earned his doctorate in English. His major professor was Dr. A. K.
Butterworth, Simms scholar at U.S.C.
