Transcription NEW SIMMS STATUES FOR BARNWELL, SC!

IN DECEMBER 2002, SOUTH CAROLINA EDUCATIONAL TELEVISION
FEATURED SCULPTOR, MRS. ZAN LEE WELLS, AND SHOWED HER
HARD AT WORK ON A CLAY BUST OF OUR. ESTEEMED AUTHOR
Simms. The likeness is good, better in fact than the one at White
Point Gardens in Charleston. He appears to be about forty-five or
fifty years old. The sculptor was lucky to have several images,
including a profile, on which to base the work. The bust will be cast
in bronze and placed in a public garden in Barnwell.
Mrs. Wells has done a bronze seated Joel Poinsett for
Greenville. She is becoming quite popular. As the sister of noted
South Carolina artist Jasper Johns, art runs in her family. She credit
her mother for being a great influence, by making her "really look at
what you see," or as Sharp Snaffles would say, "Obsarve!" Her work
is appealing, particularly her statues of children. The folks in
Barnwell are to be commended for their excellent choice of sculptors.
It will be quite a treat to visit it. We are certain Barnwell will do
Simms proud at the unveiling! Barnwell Simms Society members,
please keep us informed and cover the event for the Review. This
celebration should get state and regional attention. Let's spread the
word!
