Transcription RECENT SIMMS SCHOLARSHIP

Miriam Shillingsburg will have news of a Simms issue of the SOUTHERN
QUARTERLY. Congratulations Mimi.

Dr David Aiken is completing work on Se's war writing. He has been
the Simms Professor at USC this past summer. He is now
teaching in the English Department at the College of Charleston.
His talk on Simms at the Southern Institute sponsored by the League
of the South this summer was a landmark of Simms research on the topic.

There will be some strong Simms echoes in Dr James Kibler's new
story cycle CHILD TO THE WATERS to be published by Pelican
Press of New Orleans in early 2003.

Jeff Rogers has a new Simms article just out. Jeff, please send me (again)
the refs to it. I can't find them.

Please keep me informed of Simms happenings folks!

REVIEW EDITOR WINS AWARD

REVIEW editor James Everett Kibler was presented a citation
and handsome check (this spring ) by the editorial staff of
the DICTIONARY OF LITERARY BIOGRAPHY for the best biography
published in the DICTIONARY OF LITERARY BIOGRAPHY for
the year 2002. The lengthy "major authors" essay was on Simms!
It contains the most up-to-date, accurate, comprehensive listing of
Simms's book and pamphlet publications. The biographical essay
has new angles on many of the facets of Simms's life and writing.
Some of these are major adjustments. It surveys the history of Simms
criticism as well. It also treats the founding of the Simms Society and
the work it and the SIMMS REVIEW have accomplished in the last ten
years of existence. Professor Kibler's readable, award-winning essay
can be found in DLB, volume 248, pp. 329-351. It comes
highly recommended as the best DLB biography (out of nearly
a thousand) published in 2002.
