Transcription *Simms had published Michael Bonham early in 1852; San Antonio, the setting for
that play, had adjoining houses with walls that allowed residents "to burrow
through the houses. With crowbars to pry apart the stone and adobe walls, they
could shape a long, protective tunnel anywhere in the city" during the first battle of
the Alamo (as quoted by Richter, 103). No doubt Simms knew this, and it might
have been another catalyst for his serializing Marie de Berniere in 1852.
