Transcription In 1861, Simms presented a copy to James Chesnut, Jr., of Camden, South
Carolina, former Senator from the state and now an important member of
President Jefferson Davis's staff. Whether or not Mrs. Chesnut (author Mary
Boykin Chesnut) perused this volume cannot be known. She does refer to Simms
in her famous memoir. Still in the library of Chesnut family descendants, Areytos
sits among other Simms titles, among them The Life of Marion, The Chevalier
Bayard, The Cassique of Kiawah, South Carolina in the Revolution and both
volumes of the John Russell edition of Poems (1853).
