1823). It was collected in Simms's The Book of My Lady. A Melange
(Philadelphia, 1833).

Signed to poem, "Boy Lost in the Woods," Southern Literary Gazette
(November 1828), 135-13 7. This poem, signed "Quince," a proved pseudonym,
is pasted in Simms's Scrapbook A, Charles Carroll Simms Collection, South
Caroliniana Library.

Signed to Simms's first known prose piece, "Light Reading," published in
Charleston Courier (27 July 1824). Simms claims the work and this pseudonym
in his list of his early contributions to the Courier in a handwritten list in
General Manuscripts Collection P 1540, South Caroliniana Library. "Light
Reading" was reprinted in James E. Kibler, "Simms's First Published Fiction,"
Studies in Bibliography, XLIV (1991), 376-380.

11. Quericus
Signed to a letter dated New York, 6 December 1854, in Charleston Evening
News (14 December 1854). Identified in Simms's Letters, VI, 156n. The letter
notices Henry Carey Baird's editions of Cowper 's Poetical Works, Beckford's
Vathek, Walpole's Castle of Otranto, and Wood's Personal Recollections of the
Stage.
